When to Book Your Newborn Session

If you are reading this and are expecting to bring a little one into the world, congratulations! You’re probably so excited for the arrival of your newborn, so you’re beginning to make plans for booking a newborn session.

After giving birth to your little one, the last thing you’ll want to do is reach out to newborn photographers and check for quick availability. Therefore, it’s always best to make plans for your newborn session ahead of time. Book a date for the session based on your due date, and most photographers have a flexible policy for rescheduling in case the baby arrives earlier or later than expected.

“How many days old should my baby be for the newborn session?” is one of the most frequently asked questions at our studio. There is no absolutely perfect time to book your session, but our studio does have a recommendation.

Our Recommendation

When parents are booking a newborn session at our Walnut Creek studio or at another location in the bay area, we recommend planning for when the baby is between 8 and 14 days old. We recommend this time frame because your baby will be at the perfect size for all the classic newborn poses (swaddle wraps, baby in the basket, etc.).

What Happens if Your Session is Earlier?

If you decide to book your session a bit earlier than the 8-14 day range, let’s say maybe around 5-7 days, you can still get absolutely beautiful images! The main difference is your baby may look a little smaller in the photos than you would like. A smaller than average newborn has more flexibility to fit in the classic poses than a larger than average newborn, however there are certain visual traits that you may not be able to capture yet, like fuller cheeks.

What Happens if Your Session is Later?

If your newborn session is later than two weeks, you can still get gorgeous images, the poses will just likely have to be different from the classic newborn poses, depending on the size of your baby. Some parents do actually prefer a later newborn session when their baby is a little bigger. This also allows for you to get more images of the baby awake, as opposed to only sleeping newborn shots.

Bottom Line

As we mentioned earlier, we recommend 8-14 days as the ideal time frame for a newborn session so your baby is the perfect size for all of the classic newborn poses. Though a slightly earlier, or slightly later newborn session will still produce beautiful images! Hopefully this article was helpful for you in planning your newborn.
