Preparing for a Maternity Photoshoot https://milkandlilyportraitco.com/blog/2021/5/preparing-for-a-maternity-photoshoot How to Prepare for a Maternity Photoshoot

Maternity CactusMaternity Cactus

First of all, congratulations! This is such an exciting time in your life right now. Enjoy it! As you plan to capture this moment with a maternity photography session, you likely have many questions (especially if this is your first time!). That’s why we prepared this guide to walk you through every step of the process and provide essential tips. At the Milk + Lily Portrait Co., our years of experience with maternity photoshoots has shown us just how important it is to make every session unique and special for the mother-to-be. The information provided below will help facilitate all of the special moments this day will entail.

Scheduling Your Photoshoot

The earlier you book your session, the better. We recommend making the call to schedule your session when you’re between 16 and 20 weeks pregnant, and booking the session date during your third trimester, ideally between 28 to 32 weeks. This time is perfect because your baby bump will be proudly showing, and you’ll still be able to move and pose comfortably.

Pre-shoot Planning Call

Every mom-to-be is special and unique, and no two sessions are ever the same; despite Pinterest and Instagram inspirations boards, a styled session printed onto your wall should be tailored to your own unique taste. That’s why our next step is always to schedule a call with you, the expectant mother. We usually like to chat about two weeks before the session to discuss what your goals are. Are we shooting for a particular space up on the wall in the living room, or for an album open on the coffee table? Do we want to shoot in-studio or on-location? We’ll help guide you through these and many more questions on the phone together.

Considerations Before Your Session

Pamper Yourself with Hair and Makeup

It is important that when you walk into the studio for the maternity session that you feel fresh and vibrant. We always recommend having a professional style your hair and makeup before your photoshoot. The Milk + Lily Portrait Co. provides an in-house hair and makeup stylist for an extra fee ($125 for hair and $125 for makeup), but if there is an outside professional with whom you are close with and would like to take care of you, that is a good option as well. The general idea is that this is a special experience, and we want you to feel pampered and luxuriant!

Get Plenty of Rest the Night Before

We know getting any type of rest during your pregnancy can be difficult (midnight bathroom visits, anyone?!), but we recommend trying to take extra consideration on getting a good night’s sleep the next before your session. While a photo shoot may not seem like the most exhaustive activity in the world, it can still be draining, and it’s important that you feel as relaxed and refreshed as possible as soon as you walk into the studio.

Eat a Good Breakfast and Drink Lots of Water!

It’s so important I’ll say it again -- Eat a good (great!) breakfast! We also recommend eating a snack or two before your session. Hydrated skin is also beautiful skin so remember to constantly drink water during the day before your photoshoot. If you forgot, don’t worry! At Milk + Lily, we have bottles of water and light snacks on hand in case you start to feel lightheaded or need an energy boost. If you have to take a few trips to the bathroom during your session, that is okay!

What and Who to Bring

Family Members

Family members, such as your spouse and children, are always welcome in a maternity shoot and can help create some beautiful moments, especially younger children with their soon-to-be sibling (these shots are precious!). If you are bringing children, it may be a good idea to arrange for someone to pick them up after their part of the shoot is complete; that way, they are not left bored, watching you in all of your individual shots. Extra people can, however, sometimes distract from the goals you may have in mind for your session. You may also want to avoid bringing close supportive friends or extended family as spectators, as it may affect how comfortable you are in front of the camera.

Special Items

Sentimental or nostalgic items such as jewelry, heirlooms, or mementos are great to bring along as they can draw out your emotion during the shoot. Anything that brings out your identity as a mother or a mother-to-be is worth including in your session!

What to Wear

There is no set rule for what to wear for a maternity shoot. We want you to be comfortable and support your vision for the session! Some Moms prefer a more casual look, while others prefer the elegant, flowery maternity dress. It’s a good idea to have multiple outfits prepared so you can try a few different looks. Our studio also does offer maternity wraps for our models, which are loose articles of fabric that flow along the woman’s skin and can create beautiful shots. Outside of personal preference, we have a couple of suggestions in regards to outfit choice. First, go with more stretchy fabrics or wear long sleeves whenever possible. Looking good is important, but so is comfort, and stretchy fabrics will allow you to feel more free-flowing during the session. Also, we recommend keeping your colors simple. You and your baby bump are the primary focuses of your photoshoot, so you may want to avoid outfits with bright or vibrant colors. Neutral tones are much better for highlighting what you wish to show during the session and work for any background or skin tone.

Other Important Considerations for the Day of the Session

Apply Non-Greasy Lotions a Few Hours Before

We want your skin to glow and look as best it can, so we recommend applying a non-greasy lotion two to three hours before the shoot. This will reduce the appearance of any uneven dry spots or other skin-related problems.

Remove Any Elastic Clothing Before the Session

Elastic clothing or accessories such as bracelets or socks can leave elastic marks on your skin, so you will want to remove those at least an hour or two before your shoot so your skin is as smooth as possible.

Most Importantly, Relax and Have Fun!

It’s easy to get caught up in the many stresses of being pregnant, and we don’t want concerns about this session to flood into that category, so remember what this session is all about: you! It’s for you to have fun and appreciate your awe and beauty as a mother-to-be while we capture all of it on camera. This is a very special day, and we are so excited to help you take part in it.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the Milk + Lily Portrait Co. at 925-705-7355 or email us    at david@milkandlilyportrait.co. We look forward to hearing from you and how you want to mark this special moment!

Preparing for a Family Photoshoot https://milkandlilyportraitco.com/blog/2021/5/preparing-for-a-family-photoshoot How to Prepare for a Family Photoshoot

Family is important to the happiness and well-being of everyone, so we are so excited that you are considering taking the opportunity to capture your beautiful family with a family photography session. At Milk + Lily Portrait Co., we know that every family is different and special, so we take extra care to ensure that your photoshoot shows your family’s unique, genuine beauty. Whether your family is young or old, big or small, we know we can capture something special for you. If your family has never done a photoshoot before, you likely have many questions about what to expect. The information below will serve as a guide and walk you through each step of the process and provide helpful tips along the way.

Preparing Yourself (as the Mom)

Mom, we know how important it is for you to look your best during a photo session, so we recommend not holding back on the hair and makeup to ensure you love the way you look in the photos. Milk and Lily Portrait Co. actually provides an in-house hair and makeup stylist for your shoot at an extra cost of $125 for hair and $125 for makeup. We highly recommend our stylist’s work, but if you have a stylist you are very close with and would prefer going to them, that is a good option too.

Preparing Yourself (as the Dad)

Dad, we know your plans are expectations for this photoshoot are different than Mom’s. Whether you’re traditionally a fan of family photos or not, the best thing you can during the session is support everyone else to make sure everyone is happy, relaxed, and comfortable. Feel free to prepare some ideas for special father-son or father-daughter shots as well.

Preparing the Kids

Preparing younger kids for a family photoshoot can at times be difficult, especially if one or all of your children are shy and not very comfortable in front of the camera. A helpful tip for this is to keep the event light and informal. Frame the event as a planned family hangout (especially if extended family members will be involved) rather than a planned family photoshoot. Planning some activity to take place during the shoot may also help get your kids' attention off their discomfort with cameras (playing outside or with toys, etc.).

What to Bring

Special Items

Some families find it very important to bring significant family heirlooms or mementos as props to be involved in the shoot. If the item is meaningful or sentimental for your family, it could definitely be worth bringing. Additionally, if one of your kids tends to feel more comfortable with a particular toy or stuffed animal on hand, it may be a good idea to bring it, even if it needs to be set aside for the session, rather than telling them to leave the item at home.

Snacks and Water

While we do have snacks and water bottles on hand in the studio, if you are filming a session at an outdoor location, it is a good idea to bring snacks in a purse in case the kids (or possibly Dad) get restless or cranky or just need a boost of energy. A photography session can be long and somewhat draining, especially if it’s outside on a hot day, which is why we recommend bringing plenty of water as well.

Change of Clothes for the Kids if Necessary

If your young kids are like most, they aren’t always the cleanest and neatest. Any type of mess such as jumping in mud or spilling ketchup is part of the daily routine in many kids’ lives, so in the event of some kind of stain, bringing an extra pair of clothes may be a smart backup option to have.

What to Wear

What your family should wear may depend on the specific photoshoot you are planning and the location you are planning it for. However, there are a few general rules and guidelines for dressing for a family session that we recommend. These rules include:

  • No graphic tees, athletic attire, or vibrant sneakers
  • Avoid wearing stripes
  • Avoid having the whole family match as this trend is outdated and isn’t the most appealing photographically
  • Wear clothes that are nice yet, comfortable, as a session is typically a couple of hours long, and we don’t want you to be in any form of pain from wearing your clothes for an extended amount of time
  • Medium to long dresses work best for women in terms of capturing movement and creating flattering images
  • Do wear any personal accessories that you normally would to stand out and show your best self

How to Help Your Family Pose

Posing altogether as a family isn’t always the easiest thing, especially if you have a large family or more energetic kids. Young kids are sometimes conditioned to say “cheese” and stare directly at the camera with a big smile, but these poses do not make for the best family photographs. Instead, we want to capture more candid moments. Everyone does not to be looking at the camera at the same time, in fact, we prefer for them not to be. Playing and interacting with your kids can often create great moments to photograph. Keep the whole setting as light and natural and possible. If you are trying to force some type of interaction with your family, it will likely show on the camera as looking forced. Make sure you all stand close to each other physically during the session to ensure your family's closeness is displayed in the photos. Most importantly, the more relaxed and comfortable everyone in your family is, the better result you will have from the session.

What About Pets?

Milk + Lily Portrait Co., like many other family photography studios, welcomes and encourages pets’ participation in a family photoshoot. If they are a part of the family, we would love for them to be a part of the pictures. One important requirement we do have with pets, though, is that if you bring them, you also bring a designated pet wrangler. This pet wrangler can be a neighbor or friend or anyone with a relationship with the dog or pet. Their job is to help keep the pet from distracting the photos being taken when they are not being photographed through play or a short walk. It is also a good idea to bring along some of your pet's favorite toys or treats to ensure they will be good participants in the session.

What to Expect After the Session

Once the session is over, all of your work is done, but the most exciting part of the process is yet to come! Our team will cull over the images for the next two weeks and pick out the best photos to show you. Then we will schedule a time for you to come into our office to look at the photos and go over pricing packages and determine which photographs you would like to purchase as prints or digitals.

We hope this information was informative and helpful in understanding everything that is involved in a family photoshoot. If you have any more questions or concerns about the process, do not hesitate to call Milk + Lily Portrait Co. at 925-705-7355 or email us at david@milkandlilyportrait.co. We look forward to hearing from you and your ideas to capture a special family moment with us!

Preparing for a Newborn Photoshoot https://milkandlilyportraitco.com/blog/2021/5/preparing-for-a-newborn-photoshoot How to Prepare for a Newborn Photoshoot
KEC10253KEC10253

If you’re reading this, congratulations! You have just brought a child into the world, which is the most incredible thing a person can do. You are likely looking to celebrate this amazing moment in your family’s lives with a special newborn photography session. Capturing these moments is essential in documenting the start of your new journey as parents. At Milk + Lily Portrait Co., we know from experience that every newborn is different and special, so we can ensure you that we will do everything to bring out your baby’s unique beauty. If this is your first time in this position, or just the first time considering a newborn photoshoot, you likely have many questions. This information below will serve as a helpful guide in walking you through every step of the process and providing valuable tips and advice along the way.

Scheduling Your Photoshoot

After deciding you want to have a newborn photography session, the next step is to schedule one with a professional photography studio like Milk + Lily Portrait Co. We recommend that the best time to have a newborn session for parents who want to see their child more awake and active is between 2 to 4 weeks after their birth. For parents who are more interested in capturing beautiful sleeping images, 1 to 2 weeks is better. We recommend that you start scheduling the newborn photoshoot ahead of time by giving the photographer your due date and planning for a shoot after that date.

Determining what You Want from the Session Ahead of Time

It is important to recognize what you are looking to get out of the newborn shoot ahead of time to plan accordingly. Newborns can be very unpredictable, especially with their sleep schedules, but the more you can influence their sleep before the shoot, the more control you will have over the pictures you want. If you want to capture adorable sleeping photos, it’s best to keep your newborn awake for 30 minutes or so before the session. Conversely, if you want to capture your newborn more awake and active, try to have him or her sleep before the session if possible. It’s also helpful to think about what type of outfits you would like your newborn to be wearing and bring multiple options. Milk + Lily Portrait Co. also has a boutique in the studio where we sell adorable baby clothes that you can purchase and use for your photo session.

Location

You can have your newborn photoshoot done in any location, but we strongly recommend doing it in our studio. Milk + Lily Portrait Co. specializes in newborn shoots, and our studio is an optimal setup. If you wish to have the session in your home, we can make that happen, and during Covid, we do not charge any additional travel setup fees.

Lighting

A common concern many new parents have about newborn photography shoots is whether or not the lighting equipment involved will hurt the newborn’s eyes in any way. It is the sign of an engaged parent to be aware and concerned of this as newborns are very sensitive to bright light. Because of this, experienced newborn studios like Milk + Lily Portrait Co. take measures to ensure that the light is controlled in a way that would not hurt the newborn in any way. Remember that your newborn's safety and well-being are the top priorities, the quality of the photos comes second.

Temperature

It is no secret that newborns can get very cold, so it is essential to always be mindful of keeping them warm throughout the shoot. At our studio, we always turn the temperature higher and ensure there are plenty of blankets around for your newborn. Additionally, we’ll make sure your newborn’s body is not left cold for long if you plan to have photos of your newborn without clothes.

Feeding and Breaks

We recommend feeding your newborn full right before the session. This will help keep your baby calm and relaxed from the start and likely a bit sleepy. During the session, you will probably need to take multiple breaks for feeding. If you express to your photographer that this is you want this to be photographed, it can be a very intimate moment between mother and child worth capturing. The session will be scheduled out over a long period of time to account for any breaks or delays that will occur. Do not stress about needing to take multiple feeding breaks or even take away from the session to address anything your newborn does. This is all a part of the process, and we recommend treating it as such.

Important Items to Bring

Babies, and especially newborns, are always accident-prone, so it’s a good idea to come stocked with extra wipes, diapers, and trash bags in the event of a mess to create a quick cleanup. Additionally, it’s a good idea to come prepared with multiple outfits and extra blankets to keep the newborn warm and happy.

Helping the Process Go Smoothly

It’s important to remember that newborns are the most adorable, yet unpredictable and messy people alive. Some type of accident will likely happen during your session, and it’s important to understand that it’s a very regular occurrence, and newborn photographers are used to these situations. The best thing that you can do for your newborn during this session is just to relax. Your baby will be feeding off of your energy, so the calmer you are, the more relaxed your child will be.

Most importantly, just sit back, relax, and enjoy witnessing the moments our photographers are capturing on camera. This will be a very special day for you and your family so remember to just enjoy the moments in front of you. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the Milk + Lily Portrait Co. at 925-705-7355 or email us at david@milkandlily.com. We look forward to hearing from you and how you want to mark this special moment!

7 Reasons to Book a Newborn Photo Session https://milkandlilyportraitco.com/blog/2020/10/7-reasons-to-book-a-newborn-photo-session 7 Reasons to Book a Newborn Photo Session

Bringing home a newborn baby is a big deal. Believe me, I completely understand that after a few hours of broken up sleep, adding something to the calendar is the last thing you want to do. When you turn to your partner and ask what day it is, you both will have different answers and neither will be correct. It's all part of the fun! (cue endless and nonsensical crying)

Quick anecdote: my wife and I stayed two nights in the hospital after meeting our son for the first time on September 30th. On that second night, my studio manager texted a cheeky message that asked when I would I like to come in for our newborn session. She goes over the same timing tips we tell all our clients, like how the ideal age is 2-10 days for the sweetest poses. I told her I absolutely cannot believe we tell clients this! We slept for maybe 20 minutes those first two nights, and thinking about having to change out of pajamas and drive a car were the furthest things from my mind. Honestly, I had a tiny bit of anxiety just thinking about it.

So what did we do? We rallied like champions! ...about a week later. Yep, day 9 we pulled ourselves together with an incredibly refreshing 2.5 hours of sleep and took the most precious photos of our son. Below are 7 reasons to help share why this was so important!

1. Your Baby is only this little once

Okay this is as basic as it gets, but that doesn't make it any less true! Now, technically most babies will lose weight for a first few days after delivery, but that's besides the point. Beside the point? Adjacent to the subject. Whatever, sleep deprivation is real! Your baby is teeny tiny and will look completely different every week ;) Our baby boy went through a blonde hair phase then right back to dark brown. Take the time to rally together and cherish this time. Really what it comes down to for me is potential. This is when your child has everything in front of them: good and bad habits, dreams and wants and everything that sets us as humans down one path or another. Love them and love this moment. You're doing great!

2020-10-22_00052020-10-22_0005New Born Session

2. The photos are perfect for your newborn announcement/friends further away

Despite this section title, it's important to remember these photos are for YOU first and foremost. My wife and I waited three weeks before even sharing cell phone pics with social media -- it's not a rule, and everyone will be different of course, but if you couldn't tell from my rambling introductory paragraphs above, we had enough to handle with our bundle of farts joy.

That being said, we absolutely wanted to share how beautiful our boy was to friends and close family! Covid-19 quarantining obviously made this more difficult than in the before time, but our unique and creative imagery said everything we were too exhausted to put into words.

2020-10-22_00272020-10-22_0027New Born Session

3. Professionals know how to pose, style, and light your session perfectly

It's literally what we spend our lives studying and perfecting. Every shoot is better than the last because we're paying attention to what went well and why playing "Baby Shark" in studio is a bad idea. Seriously though, thanks to constant study, I knew how to wrap up a newborn in a potato sack swaddle that'll soothe the fussiest of babies before I even met my son. We attend seminars and international photography conventions (jealous?) so we may continue to perfect our art.

But don't take our word for it...let's see what some Yelp! reviews have said about our professionalism:
"...got all my 3 boys smiling and happy for numerous pictures. He was professional, reliable, and easy to work with!" - Marisa B. 12/20/2020
"Completely in LOVE with my portraits...They are so ethereal and beautiful. My entire experience was perfect...I cried because they were so well done and wanted to purchase ALL of them!" - Kelly G. 12/3/2020
"...an absolute gem of a find. They were so wonderfully patient with our daughter during our photo session. I cannot recommend them enough...we honestly couldn't decide which photos we liked best, they were all that great!" - Katia D. 9/4/2020

Lighting is probably the single most important factor in newborn photography. We use continuous lighting to keep everyone calm and peaceful, which makes all the difference as your little one is developing their motor skills and moro reflex. Wait, posing is actually more important than lighting because nothing is more important than safety! Just like we'll never pose a family photography session on train tracks (Google it), we'll never put your brand new human in any of the dangerous, spine-crunching poses you might see on the web. Okay so posing, final answer as to the most important thing we do better in-studio than at home!

2020-10-22_00352020-10-22_0035New Born Session 4. We can take pictures of you and your newborn together (plus your partner and/or other kids)

I mean...duh, right? Besides the fact that front facing cell phone cameras are infinitely inferior quality, you're simply limiting what is possible by keeping one hand on the phone. Take this as an opportunity to let someone else take control for a little while so you can relax and enjoy the experience with your family :)

2020-10-22_00192020-10-22_0019Family Photoshoot Sessions

5. High Quality Wall Art, Albums and Loose Prints

Studies show that children who grow up with pictures of themselves and their family on the wall have higher self esteem and a greater sense of belonging. To that end, we feature the highest quality print labs and use archival quality inks and papers, in addition to a lifetime replacement guarantee to protect against...accidents;) That's right - any damage at all to your beautiful wall art, albums or loose prints are covered 100% for free replacement. This is because our heirloom items are meant to be passed down to future generations and we'll do anything we can do to ensure they have the opportunity to do so.

2020-10-22_00012020-10-22_0001New Born Session

6. Remembering them when they were cute! Especially when they’re older...

If you're like my wife and I, you're a little bit anxious about how your kids will behave in their teens. We both went through phases where we were...less than kind to our parents (love you, mom and dad!), and fear karmic justice 16ish years from now. My dad's favorite joke whenever my mom talks about my being a cute baby (subtle backdoor brag) is to ask, "well what the heck happened?" Pause for laughter. Pause for applause...oh, a standing ovation? You're too kind. Or I need sleep. Maybe both?

In either case, when our adorable bundles morph into acne-prone monsters we can shelter in the panic room with a bottle of wine and a photo album of when the kiddos were cute and quiet and full of love.

7. The photos are just so darn cute!

Enough said. Book your session with us today!

Trick or Treat: It's Halloween! https://milkandlilyportraitco.com/blog/2019/10/trick-or-treat-its-halloween On Friday October 25th we were thrilled to sponsor the Walnut Creek Downtown Halloween Trick or Treat event. We had the opportunity to capture everybody's awesome costumes at Walnut Creek City Hall as well as take some super fun professional portraits in our brand new studio space. We had over 100 people come through and we loved every minute of it! It was a joy to work with so many incredible families from the East Bay and beyond. :)
